  1. through the window

    she looks
    off to distant hills
    past the barn
    where she used to play

    how is it she
    still finds herself
    rooted here
    in the same place
    same view
    same hills
    same barn

    she looks
    down
    her hands
    in the buttermilk bowl
    kneading the recipe
    she knows
no need to look it up

    her hands
    strong
    punching down the dough
    deflating it
    with a sigh

    she looks
    off to distant hills
    a mourning dove rises
    off the courting frogs statue
    startled by the bark
    of the dog

  3. in the distance blue hills stand proud and
still as a statue, a dove sits on a barn rafter –
below a cat laps milk from a bowl
